There are several types of snorkels. The "J" tube style, the "Purge Valve" style and the "Semi-dry" style and last but not least, the "collapsible" style. divers use different snorkels for many reasons, mainly fit and comfort.
The "J" style is the basic snorkel. It can be used in both scuba abd snorkeling. This type does not have a "purge valve" at the bottom of the tube so you need to use extra force to remove water from the tube.
The "Purge valve" style has a valve at the bottom of the tube that allows less force to remove water from the tube.
The "Semi-dry" snorkel has a purge valve and a "diverter" at the top of the tube to help prevent water from filling the tube while you are at the surface. It does not prevent water from filling the tube while you are submerged.
