The PADI Divemaster Program is a leadership course requiring a high level of diving skills, responsibility and the proper approach to problem solving. The program is divided into two phases. The first phase consists of a series of lectures, pool sessions, and open water exercises designed to bring all candidates up to a standard performance and knowledge level. To complete Phase 1, the Divemaster candidate must also attend an Equipment Specialist Course. The Oxygen Provider Course is also strongly recommended.

After completing Phase 1, the Divemaster candidate enters Phase 2: The Internship Phase. Here the candidate works with actual classes both in the pool and in open water situations. Divemaster candidates are assigned specific tasks during these sessions and are evaluated on their performance.

In addition to the Open Water classes, Certification dives, and an Advance Open Water class, the Divemaster candidate may gain experience by staffing at a reduced cost in a variety of environments such as the quarry, Florida Rivers and Springs, the Florida Keys, Radio Island, and off-shore N.C.
